New Thoughts and New Ideas Make a Great New Year

Updated: Jan 30, 2021

Did you know that your thoughts can eventually influence your actions, which, in turn, affect your life? Whichever thoughts you often repeat in your mind influence your life much more than you realize.

In psychology, we have what are known as core beliefs. These are the most basic, strongest beliefs you have about yourself and the world. Often, core beliefs form during childhood and are solidified in adulthood. For example, when you were a child, if you were made to believe that you were never good enough, that your achievements did not matter unless you are the best, this belief about yourself may carry on even into your adulthood. It could manifest in you having anxiety, or fearing to try new things because you think you will fail.

This is a prime example of how your core beliefs can affect your life. As you can see, our thoughts and ideas, and how we perceive others and the world around us, are heavily influenced by our core beliefs. If you, like many others, have beliefs and thinking patterns that you would like to change, now is the apt time to work on it!

As the new year is here, you have an opportunity to work on letting go of negative beliefs about yourself and realize that they are nothing more than beliefs, not facts. Of course, letting go of these and forming new thoughts and ideas won’t be easy, but the work you put in will be worth it.

Steps you can take to cultivate positive thinking

The new year could be a fresh start for you, so you can learn to let go of toxic thought patterns and start embracing more positive thinking that could improve your life. What better way to ring in 2021 than with a hopeful attitude that this will be the year you get to know yourself better, understand why you think the way you do, and how can tune your thoughts to a more positive tone?

That being said, it is also important to acknowledge that changing your thinking is not just something you can achieve overnight. Adopting new thoughts and ideas requires real work and dedication. Think about it – it literally involves undoing years and years of thought patterns that your mind has become accustomed to.

However, it is not impossible. When you have the right support from a professional, changing the way you think to foster positivity is a real, achievable goal.
